Open Letter.

Overall view of my formal letter to Converse.
Here is my offfical letter which is titled to the CEO Of Converse, explainging how i feel about the new ownership of the company and how they have changed in a negative way from there classic icon status.
For my graphic composition i wanted to capture my passion against the materials that are now used for these famous shoes, as they have now turned for the quantity of produce than their old ways of quality. To do that  I have used a pair of chucks, torn them apart and used them as material to write my angst. This did seem as a struggle as it was hard for the writing to be neat as well as actually show up on the rough material.

Posters.

for my poster I have selected the two precendants below to express the idea of Converse compared to Nike, discussing the difference of cost, materials and manufacturing.
For the idea of where to photograph the poster, I had ideas of using an accessable basketball court, using the marked lines on the concrete as a graphic composition, using the backboard or the overall court. I also thought of shops to advertise this poster, such as Sports World, Rebel Sports and other sporting goods shops.
Her is the graphic image of my poster, and the poster of which is advertised in a specific landscape area.

Poster Precedents.

I have chosen to work with two artist examples to create my poster on Converse appossed to Nike.
From the website given (typographicposters.com) i was able to find posters which could help me graphically depict my arguement against the two Brands present.

I have chosen these two posters to help represent my position at what I think of converse as a brand, for the way the right one shows a contrasting feeling towards the poster, which i would like to inspire the design of my own from. I have chosen the left one as the writing in the background surrounds the image present in the poster, yet doesn't smother the overall design, yet makes it almost stand out more from the paper. I would like to use this to express my type in my design, although there is a word limit.

WORD.

For the idea of my word, my initial idea is to have the word "Classic" to represent the history of Converse and the positive outlook it has had in the last century.
For the physical landscape of the picture, i have picked a basketball scene which related to the brand through the history of the shoe and how it was apart of the evolution of Basketball in America.
Having to use a thread as such to construct te word, i automatically thought of using materials off the famous shoe itslef. SHOELACES.
through this i have experimented how to portray this, and have it as a constructed thread. I have tried using spray glue which, didn't seem to help as much but just it to be sticky.
Then i watered P.V.A glue down to a more liquid state, to soak the shoelaces in. This thankfully stiffened the material.
I have also threaded the shoelace into mesh wire to keep it into a more stiffened solid.

These as my final images that capture my word expressing the brand Converse and its historical significants.
I have used these colouring techniques for the photo as it gives the essence of an old image.

Advertising Campaign

Our company "Milk Audio" is now involved into the marketing perspective, where we have produced a 15 second ad.
Here following is the Advertisement and the statement.

'Our advertisement is aimed at introducing Milk Audio into the market, we focus on young professionals, aiming to inform potential cilents on who we are and what we do. Milk audio is focused on high quality sound which is accentuated in the advert through the use of sound contrast. From the unclear, fuzzy sound in the beginning to the clear, crisp sound in the end. As for the music in the advert we decided to go with a upbeat sound from a new genre of music that relies upon high quality sound to produce the desired effect - again targeting young professionals.'

Converse revolutionized the evolution of basketball in America, and witnessed the birth of Rock 'n' Roll. This brand has survived through all history and has become its own American Icon.
Starting in 1908 this company's ambitions would have never been to imagine the credit this classic shoe style has been rewarded and still be breeding into the 21st century.
Just alone the years this brand has endured shows the quality and the respect Converse has been given, they even have their shoe design ripped off by others.
Having a pair of 'Chucks' are not only comfortable and long lasting, but can bring out your own identity   through the style you choose or how you decorate them. There is even a website where you can create your own!
so whatever your stereotype is, Converse can help you express yourself.
I myself admire this brand as their advertising campaigns and their fundraising ideas (such as the giant Converse All Star to help raise money for the Earthquake and Tsunami which hit Japan earlier this year).
The downside to this iconic brand, is in 2001, where Converse went into bankruptcy and sold out to the opposition brand Nike. Nike is known for its illegal use of slavery overseas where the products are made. Converse has now sold out to them, letting the classic shoes not to be made in America, but by foreign children overseas illegally. Thus ruining the reputation they once had.

For my word I am going on a positive/negative stance for my project and have a couple ideas:
+ Americanized
+ Icon
+Classic
This will take place at a basketball court,  showing where the brand really took off, and the material is the converse shoelaces, representing the brands product. to bring out the negative through the word i want to silhouette a black shoelace through he middle of the word shaped into the Nike brands logo, a tick. Thus showing converse's reputation has been inked and destroyed with the ties linked to Nike.

For my poster i am comparing the two brand, mine Converse, and Nike, its superior.
Although Nike now owns Converse, in my poster design i want to compare how Converse, before bankruptcy, was better than Nike as of the labour taken to produce the products and the materials in the making.

My open letter will be about how I enjoy their campaigns and advertising ideas. I will offer suggestions on what I think they can improve on, like looking back on past situations and telling them what I think they could have done about things. I will also openly express my opinions on topics that I feel need more attention.
For a graphic composition i am going to experiment with using the materials of a converse shoe itself for a base, or even to construct some of the letter.

Converse

For project Three, we are to choose a brand/company to investigate and study the history on. For this I have chosen the well known American brand' Converse'. Here I have included my research and the bibliography which i have used for my planning. My brainstorm including the view of Converse will be loaded soon.

Group project.

As a team, Fale Ahchong, Tyler Frenguelli and I, were given a company name and the idea of what it specializes in to create our own logo and slogan for the brand.

" Milk Audio" is a  founded business by college graduates in 2010 based in Iceland. This company's main focus is speakers and we wish to aim their brand further into international awareness.
We want to focus strongly on promoting this product through a variety of forms including advertisement campaigns which highlight the quality of their designs. We want to use this as a way for the company to be more accessible  to the expanding market.
Another example of  advertising or marketing scheme, is to link our branded speaker system into other companies projects, such as the Apple Ipod or Mac Computer.

For the logo idea, we wanted to show the professional high quality of the company, whilst being eye catching. Here i have designed our logo which is 'Milk Audio' into the shape of a musical note, showing the business aspects, linking it to the speakers. The shape is crafted by splatters of milk, as well as the font texture.

The slogan which we created was "Activate your audio with Milk". Using alliteration and pun, we were able to form this slogan into a catchy and well designed in a high class agenda. activate, to start, your audio, music technology(referring to speakers) with milk, our company. This was a well thought out slogan which included the business name, what it makes, and how you can use it all in one.

Finale

Here is my 30 second stop motion video clip showing my vision that, "advertising is everywhere".
Using photographs around central Wellington and a lot of Photoshopping, i managed to pull this together with my computer made sound effects of advertisements played on a radio.
I was able to use garage band to put them together and mash them up with over lapping to increase the intensity of the advertising's attack on the design student, and the white noise to show defeat of the media aspect over the student.

StoryBoard.

Research.

Brainstorming.

As I am heading into the world of media design for my university years I have chosen to do my idea on..
The Awareness of advertisements today as opposed to previous years.
It is to show how we are becoming more aware of marketing in our surroundings and how it is almost suffocating the relevance of design.

For the making of the clip I was wanting to have a sort of effect showing how this current affair is bad.
Here are some of my ideas present for the outlook and features of the movie.

- Oren Lavie's video clip, which features her on her bed stop motion style with her 'walking' with obstacles/ objects that come into screen as she is moving through all this space but yet she is still in the same place on her bed.

- Logorama - cartoon world based on advertisements.

I also want the adverts to seem as they're attacking the design student, showing how bad the marketing is affecting the student and her future towards the design industry of Communications.

TYPOGRAPHY.

For my own design of Typography, i used the Quote ".. Not perfect, always have a little edge." This quote was featured in the documentary of the type "Helvetica". It inspired me along with the concept of edgy punk fonts which were used in the 80's era by punk bands such as 'Blondie' and 'Sex Pistols'. These edgy, provocative type faces created a 'punk' facade to the world, something of which their 'punk-rocker' followers would be able to identify with. I intended to capture this idea, along with the aesthetic of Helvetica, and transform a type face which has been used all around the world. For this I was able to create it using tools on photoshop mixing both straight bold Helvetica and my design of punk type. I wanted to keep the Helvetica untouched and use the space around the lettering to show the "little edge" I was aiming for.

6. Axonometric.

This is my first time doing any sort of graphical drawing (other than Section). To be honest I think this was a good job and it captured the movement of my object, being a craft knife, perfectly. the movement shows the blade in various sizes coming out of the object and the movement of the dial which forces the blade to slide in and out of the socket. this also tightens and loosens with the movement but i was unable to describe that in my axo drawing.

5.Sketch.

This was my interpretation of one of the artist models work presented to us at the start of our 6th lesson. Here I used a .2 pen to create lighter and darker gradients through the pattern around and in my object. I was able to do this through the repetition of lines and the space between them varying sizes.

4. Section.

This was my first attempts at graphic drawings, i hope it is portraying the right standards of a sectional drawing. My object was a craft knife.

3.Hatch.

This was one of my last tries at hatching as I was experimenting with spiraling the shadings through the page, which I found was not a choice we could present with. This hatching shows my capability of shading through the density of my work, and how with four separate patterns I was able to show the same grading of shade portrayed through each whilst changing the gradient across the page at the same time.

2. Draw.

Here we were to draw an object and its different views with no ruler used. Although I am not much of a drawer, and love to show my art through design, I think I did well with this project as the sizing and features on my object are relatively precise. The object, being my phone, did not have too many important features on all the sides, but I wanted to show a 3D look to my drawing to create the object to the audience as a whole.

1. Identity.

For this project, Identity, I was able to pick 5 items from my bag and off myself that would best describe my character. These five items included my stretcher, which is a type of earring that stretches the lobe cavity. This shows my edgy and trying new things side to me. My phone, which i keep on me nearly every minute of the day, showing my need to communicate with others via vertical messaging. My sunglasses, which are one shade of black that indicates my views on style and my bold look. My necklace, which has recently broke, which also is an example of my fashion taste and accessories that i wear, it shows my pretty girl side with an indie feel which then relates to the kind of music I listen to. Lastly a pen, this shows the artistic side of me that is shown through my drawings and designs.
All of these items are composed into a shape that creates an 'L' which then stands for the letter of my name.
